More on the Spanking Issue...

This is such a hot topic to debate. I sometimes dislike discussing it on the unschooling lists. There are good people on both sides of the debate, and I definitely do not want to offend anyone. But I wanted to post here in case anyone would like to take up the debate here. I have heard arguments that many people feel it is okay to discipline their children by spanking with an object. I have likened that to slavery in the South. Slave owners felt it was their right to own slaves, often based on a misinterpretation of Scripture. Just like today, people feel it is their right to discipline "with a rod," based on what many believe is a misinterpretation of Scripture. I cannot see the difference between making slavery illegal and making hitting children with an object illegal. Just an idea if anyone is interested in taking me up on this. :^)

Have you looked into this?

I can't really comment on the slavery issue because I have never thought about it or equated the two. I just really don't want any more laws and laws don't keep people from doing what they are going to do anyway.

Thanks for the link. I will check into it. I don't want people to think I'm not supportive of parental rights. I definitely am! For instance, I think the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child needs some serious rewording before it would be adopted by the U.S. I'm totally opposed to the ideas of some Presidential candidates - such as universal preschool, etc., because it would seem to put too much government control (in my opinion, anyway). This is really just a concern for me, and I appreciate the link!

Jordan Riak is the guy to talk to about spanking. His arguments against it are beyond challenge. Although they can certainly be ignored by those who intend to spank anyway, and indeed they often are, unfortunately.

I don't want to debate this "hot" topic too much either, but I have heard some reasoning for using "rod" (wooden spoon, switch, whatever) to "discipline" a child. The theory is that by using an inanimate object to give your child gentle correction you are not equating your hand with the pain. Hands are for hugging, holding, and loving your child. At least that is the reasoning I have heard. Do I agree? Not necessarily.

I honestly just wish people could see there are so many other ways to discipline. I can see people's point about wanting to have their hands used for loving. That is definitely important! But I'm with you, I wouldn't agree with their logic necessarily. It sounds logical, but it's almost like saying a murderer didn't kill someone, the gun did. I know that's extreme. That's a good argument people use, though. Thank you for bringing that up!
